To complement EHL’s advocacy work, the Endangered Habitats Conservancy
(EHC) was formed in late 2005 to work directly with property owners to
conserve their land through purchase or easement. EHC can also hold and
manage habitat lands.
Initially, EHC will focus on the restoration and management of the El
Monte Valley in San Diego County, working in partnership with the
landowner, the Helix Water District, and El Capitan Golf, a leaseholder
willing to forego plans for two golf courses. Other opportunities along
the San Diego River and in nearby Crest are under investigation. EHC
also hopes to help manage and monitor portions of the expanding
Multiple Species Conservation Program reserve system, in association
with the San Diego Conservation Resource Network, an organization of
local land trusts and conservation groups.
We expect to build upon our long-term relationships with state,
federal, and local agencies, the private sector, and local communities
as we develop this new Conservancy. In this effort, EHC will be guided
by many of the same people who have provided leadership and continuity
to EHL over the years.
