Cross-border linkages between the United States and Mexico are an
international conservation priority. EHL is working to save the La
Posta linkage in San Diego from ill-conceived development.
Along the border with Baja California, much connectivity has been lost
due to the sprawl of metropolitan Tijuana. Further to the east, around
the San Diego town of Campo, the Conservation Biology Institute has
identified a landscape level linkage around the La Posta Valley, which
can connect the Peninsular Ranges on both sides of the border and also
preserve an ecologically important coastal-desert transition zone.
Over a dozen development projects, estate lot subdivisions, and mining
operations now threaten the linkage. Besides tracking these projects
and filing comments under CEQA, EHL is seeking to protect these lands
via the “2020” General Plan update. We are also working with The Nature
Conservancy in its efforts to marshal funds and acquire key properties.
