Terra Peninsular, a Mexican land trust and EHL partner, has obtained purchase agreements on 18,000 acres of pristine habitat south of San Quintín Bay near El Rosario.

Over the last several years, Terra Peninsular has developed a strategic plan for conserving the still magnificent coastal sage scrub ecosystem in Baja California. The lands brought under agreement are threatened in the medium and long term by encroaching agriculture and urban development from the north and by a large-scale tourism project immediately to the south. Many of the parcels are roadless and ungrazed, and constitute true wilderness. Recent legal changes have made quick action essential, as the traditional communal ownership that holds the property – an ejido – is now able to privatize its holdings.

Terra Peninsular’s plan was catalyzed into action when EHL secured private funds for a 10-year purchase option on close to 6,000 acres of biologically rich but rapidly vanishing maritime succulent scrub near the coast. This quickly grew to 18,000 acres with other funding sources. We are excited by this extraordinary opportunity, and will keep you informed as to how you can help.
