The San Bernardino Sun (“Baca wants Delhi Sands Flower-loving flies off list,” March 18, 2011) covered the latest episode in the long-running debate over the endangered species listing of the Delhi Sands flower-loving fly. This rare and unique animal is a key species in an almost vanished inland dune ecosystem in western San Bernardino County. Although behaving more like a bee as it feeds upon nectar, it has been repeatedly used as fodder to attack the Endangered Species Act because of its “fly” moniker. Targeted specifically at the Delhi Sands population, Congressman Baca’s proposal would require the delisting of species that have not increased in numbers over an arbitrary period of time or cause “economic hardship.” Ironically, at this very time, the City of Colton is making progress in crafting a habitat conservation plan for the survival and recovery of the fly. Regarding the Baca bill, EHL Executive Director Dan Silver was quoted, "It doesn't make any sense," he said. "You don't take a species off the list just because a species is having a hard time recovering. It's like saying doctors should give up on their sick patients."
