The EHL-founded
Earth Discovery Institute
is located at the Crestridge Ecological Reserve, east of San
Diego. Its environmental education programs have reached over
1000 students and Urban Corps youth.
With the leadership of
Institute staff, these young people have gained important knowledge
about native plants, animals, and biological systems through “hands on”
programs. The present focus is on habitat restoration, species
monitoring, and rebuilding after the 2003 Cedar Fire, which burned
through 90% of the Reserve.
A
straw bale kiosk, designed by renowned architect James Hubbell, was
destroyed in the fire. However, rebuilding is nearing completion thanks
to the energetic work of the Urban Corps of San Diego. Eventually the
Earth Discovery Institute will include a field station that will serve
research needs of the San Diego Multiple Species Conservation Program
(MSCP).
