EHL was featured in the media on the housing shortage, fire management, and bighorn sheep.

EHL and the San Diego Building Industry Association co-authored on op-ed on meeting the housing challenge with “smart growth” within existing towns and villages. Published in Voice of San Diego, The article cited punishing long-distance commutes from Riverside and Mexico into the San Diego region, and made specific suggestions.

Our shared recommendations included fast-tracking overdue updates to the county’s zoning ordinance to allow greater flexibility, facilitating more feasible village development at moderate densities, offering expedited permitting to projects in village areas and adopting an inclusionary housing ordinance for low-income homes.

Also, the Chaparral Institute and EHL lawsuit against the Board of Forestry made the front page of the Los Angeles Times (“Cal Fire approach to SoCal’s wildfire crisis could make things worse, court says." Nov. 28, 2025). The article covered the legal victory of EHL and California Chaparral Institute against excessive habitat removal by CAL FIRE under its Vegetation Treatment Program (VTP). The court called attention to the increased flammability resulting from the invasive weeks that follow native plant removal. https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2025-11-25/cal-fire-approach-to-socals-wildfire-crisis-could-make-things-worse-court-says Fortunately, the treatments that provide the most public safety also require the least harm to the natural world. This knowledge was used to craft an interim program to allow legitimate treatments to continue until a revised VTP is adopted. EHL looks forward to working with the Board of Forestry on an updated VTP.

The Los Angeles Times also covered how barriers to prevent migrants from crossing the U.S.-Mexico border are also stopping wildlife ("Rare sheep are U.S.-Mexico border crossers, but they're hitting a sharp new obstacle," Feb. 1, 2026). Action taken by EHL was referenced.
